Banff National Park is home to numerous lakes of various sizes. While it’s difficult to provide an exact count due to the ever-changing nature of glacial melt and smaller bodies of water that may not be well-documented, there are dozens of lakes within the park’s boundaries. Some of the more prominent ones have gained international recognition for their stunning beauty, such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, Peyto Lake, Bow Lake and Lake Minnewanka. However, there are many smaller lakes and tarns scattered throughout the park, each contributing to the park’s diverse and breathtaking landscape.
Lake Louise
Perhaps the most famous lake in Banff National Park, Lake Louise is known for its mesmerizing turquoise waters, surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. Moraine Lake
Another iconic lake in Banff, Moraine Lake boasts vivid blue-green waters set against the backdrop of the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Peyto Lake
This glacier-fed lake is famous for its vibrant turquoise color, caused by light reflecting off rock flour suspended in the water. It’s easily accessible via a short hike from the Icefields Parkway and offers breathtaking panoramic views from the nearby lookout point.
Bow Lake
Located along the Icefields Parkway, Bow Lake is known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning views of Bow Glacier. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails around the lake or simply take in the scenery from the shores.
Lake Minnewanka
This large glacial lake is the largest body of water in Banff National Park. It offers various recreational activities such as boat tours, fishing, hiking, and picnicking. The area is also rich in history, with submerged remnants of a former townsite accessible to scuba divers.
